Second Copy is unable to set the file date/time stamp on the destination volume to match exactly with the source.
2. Second Copy is unable to read or write the file attributes on either source or the destination file.
3. The source file has an invalid time/stamp.

In rare cases, it may be possible that the file systems are incorrectly reported as the same even when they are not the same. Therefore, setting the option below will force Second Copy to ignore time difference of 2 seconds.

1. Exit Second Copy
2. Edit the profiles.dat file
3. Add the following line in the [Options] section for the profile in question:

"IgnoreTimeDifference=2" without the quotes

4. Save the profiles.dat file
5. Start Second Copy
6. Run the profile

Note: Second Copy 7 stores its profiles and settings information in a hidden file called "profiles.dat" under "\Documents and Settings\<Username><USERNAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Centered Systems\Second Copy" folder. (where, <Username> <USERNAME>is the currently logged in username.

In Vista, Second Copy 7's profiles.dat file is stored under "\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Centered Systems\Second Copy" folder.

Second Cop

Why doesn't Second Copy allow an Exact Copy or Exact Compress when using the Archive Bit for incremental copying? (i.e. to obsolete files from the destination.)

Abstract:
When you use Archive bit option, Second Copy only considers those files that have the archive bit set for the copying purposes. With the Archive bit option if you delete a file on the source then Seocnd Copy would not be able to pick that deleted file in its list of files to be copied, that had the archive bit set. Hence, Second Copy would not be able to match the corresponding file in the destination folder. Therefore with Archive bit options Second Copy does not delete obsolete files in the Exact Copy mode.

If you want Exact copy or Exact compress then you should not use the Archive bit option.

When compressing folders Second Copy does not compress empty folders.

Abstract: This is by design. When Second Copy first starts in the system tray, it shows Balloon Hint. If you click on this Balloon Hint so that it would not show up again, it still continues to show the next time Second Copy starts. Then you can set the Second Copy profiles not to run when a specific Hardware Profile is selected at bootup. For instance, users would boot their laptops by selecting a hardware profile called, say OffLine, and you could set the Second Copy profiles not to run when this "OffLine" Hardware Profile is selected. In this way, Second Copy would not run the Second Copy profiles because of the particular hardware profile selection. Second Copy would make an error entry in the log file to remind that the backups have not been completed due to the Hardware Profile selection. To set the Second Copy profiles not to run when a certain Hardware Profile is selected, first create the two hardware profiles as described above, and then follow the steps below:

1. From the profile's properties window, go to the "How?" tab
2. Click on the Advanced Properties button
3. Click on the Hardware Profiles tab
4. Select one of the hardware profiles listed under the section "Skip when current hardware profile is".

This would cause Second Copy profiles not to run when Windows is booted with this hardware profile.

5. Click on OK

I cannot copy files to a network share when running Second Copy as a service using Local System Account

Abstract:
When you run Second Copy as a service the Local System Account used for the service may not have adequate permissions to access the network share.

Here is a suggestion to try:

Create a username on local and remote computers with same username and password. Then make sure that this username has full control to the source and the destination folders. Then login as that user and start Second Copy. Then uncheck the box "Start at log in" from the Edit | Options | Startup tab.

Then Exit Second Copy. Then set up the service for this username.

How can I disable the prompt to run the profiles each time an external USB drive is inserted?

Abstract:
If you are using Second Copy 7, then each time you insert the USB drive you will be prompted whether or not you want to run the profiles. Then go to the Finish tab and click on the Finish button to save the profile.

Then go back to the profiles' properties, and now this time enter "?:\" in the Destination folder filed instead of the actual drive letter (e.g. "?:\Backup" without the quotes). Then go to the Finish tab and click on the
Finish button to save the profile. From now on, Second Copy would automatically detect the correct drive letter based on the USB drive's volume name.

Note:

"Copy only to volume named" option box is only displayed if Windows reports the drive to be a removable drive. Second Copy first copies a source file to a file named SCTEMP.TMP in the destination folder. On successful completion of the copy, it renames it to the destination file. This is done to ensure that the old version of the destination file does not get destroyed if the system crashes before the copy completes.

If the destination file system does not support the renaming of the temporary files, you can bypass this behavior by setting the following option:

1. You can get to the "How?" tab when you select the Custom setup for the profile.

If you want to store more than 25 old versions or by date, you can use the built-in feature of Directory Macro Expansion.

Using Directory Macro Expansion you can automatically create folders based on the current date or time and define them at the destination specification to copy files by date and time.

Example: On September 5th 2007, a folder name C:\Backup\$Date$ will expand to C:\Backup\20070905.

Or you can use Second Copy to compress files and use the built-in Directory Macro Expansion feature. Using Directory Macro Expansion you can automatically create filenames of the zip files based on the current date or time. Second Copy names the zip file at the destination after the name of the profile. Therefore, you can name the profile (or rename the existing profile) using the Directory Macro Expansion feature. e.g. the profile name may look like "mybackup-$date$" or "mybackup-$time$. Please refer to the Help file for more options on Directory Macro Expansion.

Can I automatically run profiles one after another?

Abstract:
Even if you set profiles to run all at the same time, they will run sequentially - one after another.

You cannot control the sequence in which the profiles are run. The only way to control which profile runs first would be to set each of the profiles to run at a specific time, or by using the Run Programs Before/After feature of Second Copy.

For example: If you want to run Profile-1 first, then Profile-2, and then Profile-3, then you can set Profile-2 to run in the "Run Programs After" section of Profile-1, and select "Wait for program before proceeding" box. Then in the Profile-2 profile's Run Programs After section, enter Profile-3 profile to run, and select "Wait for program before proceeding" box. For more information on running programs before and after, please refer to the Help file.

What does blue or green arrow next to a profile name mean?

Abstract:
Second Copy marks the profile with various graphic symbols to indicate what state it is in. Left mouse click on this icon to open the main Second Copy window. Then from the main Second Copy window, click on "Help" and then select "Enter License Information". Then you can enter the registration information as you have received when you ordered Second Copy.

If you do not see the item "Enter License Information" then you may already have registered Second Copy. You can confirm this by selecting "About" on the "Help" menu.

Can Second Copy be used for disk mirroring?

Abstract:
Second Copy is not a disk mirroring software. Second Copy is not designed to copy NT/2000/XP/2003 registry files. Second Copy is primarily designed to backup your important data files automatically in the background.

Can I run Second Copy profiles using a batch file?

Abstract:
You can use the command line options to create a batch file.

Please try creating a batch file that contains the following lines for the profiles and then create a shortcut for this batch file:

Start "title" "C:\Program Files\SecCopy\seccopy.exe"
"C:\Program Files\SecCopy\seccopy.exe" "Profile 1"
"C:\Program Files\SecCopy\seccopy.exe" "Profile 2"
"C:\Program Files\SecCopy\seccopy.exe" /ExitWhenIdle

Note:
The word "title" can be any word.

Does Second Copy support non-English characters in the filenames?

Abstract:
The current version of Second Copy does not support multi-byte characters such as used in non-English languages. However we have this feature on our wish list. Meanwhile, please try changing the non-unicode program deafult to the language of the filename in the Control Panel for the Regional Setting.

Maximum length for filenames and path

Abstract:
There are maximum limits, imposed by Windows, on how long you can have an ASCI file name and the full path as follows:

MAX_FILE_NAME is 256
MAX_PATH is 260

If you come across a filename/path that is too long for Second Copy to copy, please reduce the length of the filename or the path, and see if that works.

Another suggestion: Create a sharename for the long path and use that sharename in the Second Copy profile. For example, if the source folder is:

\Documents and Settings\MyUsername\My Documents\Important Data Files\Files at Work\Accounting files\Data

Then create a sharename for the last folder Data and use the UNC path for it in the Second Copy profile. (e.g. \\servername\sharename where servername is the name of the computer and the sharename is the name of the share.)

What is Eureka Log: ERegistryException

Abstract:
It seems that something on your computer is blocking Second Copy to create entries into Windows Registry. Please login as the administrator. Then disable all anti-virus, anti-spyware, and security software from your computer. Then install Second Copy again.

Alternatively, you can edit Windows registry as follows:

1. Use "Regedit" from the "Run" command on the "Start" menu
2. Go to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Then add the following String Value:

Value Name: Second Copy
Value Data: "C:\Program Files\SecCopy\SecCopy.exe"

Note:
This error means that second copy is unable to write into the following registry key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The user may not have permission to write to this key. The system administrator or some antivirus software may be preventing access to this key. The entry in this key is only to tell Windows to start Second Copy next time the user logs in.

If this can not be fixed, as a workaround, add the following section to the profiles.dat file to turn off autostart.

[Options]
AutoStart=2

Then add a shortcut to the All Programs | Startup group to run Second Copy to achieve the same effect.
